UMW Softball Splits with Shawnee St. in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Wednesday doubleheader in Myrtle Beach with Shawnee State University, winning the opener, 3-1, before falling, 7-3, in game two. The Eagles move to 7-1 on the season.

In the opener, Shawnee State scored one unearned run in the first. The Eagles knotted the score with a run in the second, as Emma Schieda singled and scored on a triple from Rayna Lloyd.

UMW forged ahead with two in the third. Kennedy Darling led off with a bunt single, and Bridget Laychak followed with an RBI double. Laychak scored on an error, and that would be all the scoring in the game.

Schieda led the Eagles with two hits, with Laychak adding the double and Rayna Lloyd the triple. Junior Caitlyn Burch gained the win, giving up one unearned run on two hits in seven innings, with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

In the second game, Shawnee State jumped in front with four runs in the first, and added one each in the second and third. UMW scored two in the fourth, as Abby Fielder singled and Emily Mousso doubled, setting up Ashley Knoll and Emma Dickson, who followed with RBI singles.

Shawnee State got a run back in the fourth, and UMW plated one in the seventh as Savannah Jaecks doubled and scored on a Fielder single.

Jaecks, Nya Lloyd, and Fielder each had two hits to pace the offense. Stephanie Folkner took the loss, allowing one earned run in .1 innings.

The Eagles will close their spring trip on Thursday with a pair of games against Northern Vermont-Johnson.
