UMW Softball Sweeps Two on Monday in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a pair of games on Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C., to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Eagles topped Northern Vermont-Lyndon, 4-3, before blanking Albion, 6-0.

Lyndon answered with three in the sixth to take the lead, but UMW scored one in the sixth as Aminah Shakir tripled and scored on a groundout from Hannah Steele. UMW won in dramatic fashion in the seventh with two runs, as Grace Drury led off with a single, and scored on a double from Bridget Laychak. After Shelby Presgrave walked, Steele provided the game winner with a run-producing double.

Mousso and Drury each had two hits, with Laychak and Steele providing the big RBI doubles. Caitlyn Burch gained the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits in two innings, with four strikeouts.

In game two, Burch scattered four hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts in a shutout, while Emma Schieda singled and homered for the second time this season, as UMW won over Albion, 6-0. Laychak singled and doubled, and Schieda drove in three runs for the Eagles.

UMW will face Lyndon and Albion again on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach.
