UMW Softball Sweeps N.C. Wesleyan in 2023 Opener

The University of Mary Washington women's softball team beat N.C. Wesleyan, 10-2, in 5 innings of play on Friday afternoon. The Eagles start the season off right at 1-0.

The Eagles would start off strong with 3 runs on 2 hits as Aminah Shakir stole home, Emma Schieda hit a homer, and Erica Shoop scored. UMW would score again in the bottom of the 2nd, with Hannah Steele touching home plate after Aminah Shakir singled to center field.

Mary Washington and N.C. Wesleyan would score in the 4th inning, as Rayna Lloyd added another RBI to her stats after walking at-bat, stealing second and third, and running it home.

The Eagles would go on to secure the win with 5 runs in the 5th inning, with Erica Shoop, Emma Schieda, Nya Lloyd, Brigid Ward, and Rayna Lloyd touching home.

Caitlyn Burch earned the win, allowing five hits and two runs in 5 innings, with no walks and four strikeouts. 

The Eagles then won game two, 9-1.

The Battling Bishops would round home once in the top of the first, but the Eagles would start off strong with 3 runs on 2 hits as Bridget LaychakErica Shoop, and Grace Dury scored.

UMW would put up another tally in the 2nd inning, with Aminah Shakir reached home after doubling to left field and advancing off of 2 singles. The Eagles would hold the Battling Bishops scoreless the rest of the match and add another 5 runs, with four coming in the 3rd inning and one more in the 5th. Shelby Presgrave would score first, with Hannah Steele, Kennedy Darling, and Rayna Lloyd following close behind to make the score 9-1 to end the game.

Stephanie Folkner earned the win, allowing three hits and one runs in 5 innings, with two walks and one strikeouts. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they face Northern Vermont-Lyndon University at 12:00 p.m.
