UMW Softball Sweeps Mary Baldwin in Saturday Twinbill

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader from Mary Baldwin University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles won game one, 5-3, before taking game two in 10 innings, 4-3, on a walkoff two-run single from senior Maggie Mrowka.

In the opener, UMW scored one in the first on a leadoff home run from Mrowka. The Eagles scored another in the third as Caroline Bird scored on an error. After a Fighting Squirrels run in the fourth, the Eagles answered in the bottom of the frame with a run on a Caroline Bird RBI single. UMW scored two in the fifth, as Mrowka drove in a run with a ground ball that became an error to second base, and Emma Schieda followed with an RBI single. Mary Baldwin scored two in the seventh in coming up short.

Bird had three hits for UMW while Mrowka singled, homered, scored three runs, and drove in two. Nya Lloyd added a pair of hits for the Eagles.

Sophomore Caitlyn Burch picked up her eighth win of the season, scattering eight hits and one earned run in seven innings, with two walks and nine strikeouts.

In game two, UMW jumped ahead with two runs in the first on a two-run homer from Bird. The score remained 2-0 until the sixth, when Mary Baldwin scored a pair of runs, and the game would go to extra innings after a scoreless seventh. Neither side scored in the eighth and ninth, but MBU scored in the 10th to take the lead. In the bottom of the 10th, Lloyd moved to third on a wild pitch, and Brigid Ward reached on a fielder's choice, and hustled to second base to put runners on second and third. After a walk to Logan Gibson to load the baes, Mrowka stroked a single to left field to score the tying and winning runs.

Bird homered and Grace Drury doubled for UMW, while Mrowka and Hannah Steele each had two hits for the Eagles. Taylor Hudson gained the win, allowing no earned runs on one hit in 4.1 innings of relief, with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Southern Virginia University at 3:00 p.m.
