UMW Softball Splits Two Games in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a pair of games in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday. The Eagles defeated Widener University, 2-1, before falling to Waynesburg University, 5-3, and move to 4-5 on the season.

In the Widener game, the score stood scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Eagles scored twice. Emma Schieda and Caitlyn Burch each provided RBI. Widener went on to score one in the sixth inning.

Burch led the Eagles at the plate with two hits and an RBI, while Schieda added her RBI double. Burch gained the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits in seven innings, with one walk and four strikeouts.

In game two, the Eagles jumped ahead of Waynesburg with three runs in the second. Morgan Gilbert and Logan Gibson each singled and both would score on errors. Maggie Mrowka followed with an RBI ground out.

Waynesburg one in the third, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth to come from behind for the win.

Aminah Shakir led the Eagles at the plate with a single and double. Taylor Hudson took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings of relief, with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday with two games against Methodist University, at noon.
