UMW Softball Tops Mount Mary, Falls to CNU at C2C Tournament

The University of Mary Washington softball team defeated Mount Mary University, 4-1, in the opening round of the Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday night in Waukesha, Wisc. The Eagles then fell to Christopher Newport University, 14-2, in round two.

In the opener, UMW scored in the bottom of the first inning, as Maggie Mrowka led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Caroline Bird.After the Blue Angels tied the score with a run in the top of the third, the Eagles went back ahead in the bottom of the inning, as Rachel Porchie and Bridget Laychak connected for consecutive doubles. The Eagles scored a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, as Laychak singled, Amina Shakir doubled, and Grace Drury provided an RBI groundout, followed by a Morgan Gilbert RBI single.

Laychak singled twice and doubled to lead the offense, while Mrowka singled and tripled. Caitlyn Burch gained the win, allowing one earned run on two hits in seven innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

In game two, Christopher Newport scored once in the first, and added nine in the second to pull away from the Eagles in a 14-2 victory. The Eagles scored in the fourth as Rachel Porchie singled, advanced on a ground out, and scored on a single from Emma Schieda

In the fifth, UMW used a walk, single, and a pair of errors to plate another run. Stephanie Folkner allowed five runs on four hits in one-plus inning in taking the loss. 

The Eagles will be back in action as they face Finlandia University on Friday at 1:00 p.m. on day two of the tournament.
