UMW Softball Splits Tuesday Doubleheader with Shenandoah

UMW Softball Splits Tuesday Doubleheader with Shenandoah

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its nonconference doubleheader with Shenandoah University on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground, winning the opener, 4-3, in eight innings, before falling in game two, 5-1. The Eagles move to 8-16 on the season.

The first game started as a pitcher's duel, as neither team managed a hit for the first three innings. The Hornets used an error and a pair of singles to score once in the fourth, and UMW got in the hit (and run) columns in the sixth. Morgan Gilbert led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Caroline Bird. Emma Scheida followed with an RBI single to tie the score.

After SU regained the lead in the seventh, UMW again tied the score in the seventh, as Grace Drury doubled, and pinch runner Kayla Mann eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Gilbert. In the eighth, the Hornets' placed runner scored on a ground out. But UMW scored a pair in the bottom of the frame to take the game, as Rachel Porchie doubled in the tying run, and scored the winner on a Bridget Laychak single.

Schieda led UMW with two hits and an RBI. Caitlyn Burch gained the win, allowing one earned run on six hits in eight innings, with one walk and four strikeouts.

In game two, the Eagles scored first with one run in the third. Drury walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on another ground out. SU scored once in the sixth to knot the score, and plated four in the seventh for the 5-1. Laychak had the Eagles' lone single.

Hadlea Valera took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings, with no walks or strikeouts.

The Eagles will visit Mary Baldwin College on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
