UMW Softball Falls to CNU in 2019 CAC Championship

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games, 8-0 and 10-6, to visiting Christopher Newport University on Saturday in the Capital Athletic Conference Championship played at the Battlergound. The Eagles close their season with a mark of 22-19.

In the opener, the game stayed scoreless until the third, as the Captains scored three times, and they added a pair if the fourth. Finally, CNU scored three runs in the sixth to finish the game.

The Eagles' lone hit came from junior outfielder Danielle Newman, who singled. Junior Megan Hibbs took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings.

The nightcap proved to be a wild, back-and-forth affair, with CNU scoring once in the first, only to see the Eagles come back with five runs in the bottom of the first. Freshman second baseman Maggie Mrowka and sophomore catcher Rachel Porchie hit consecutive doubles to score one, and after a walk and single to laod the bases, two more runs came in to score after a fielder's choice and error. Freshman shortstop Caroline Bird then added a two-run single to up the Eagle lead to 5-1.

CNU then began to chip away at the deficit, scoring two in the second, one in the third, and regained the lead with four in the fourth. UMW got a run back in the fourth as junior Courtney Shea doubled, moved to third on a bunt single, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mrowka. The Captains plated single runs in the fifth and seventh for the final outcome. UMW rallied to laod the bases in the sixth, but a standout catch from the Captains' left fielder prevented the possible tying runs from pushing across.

Porchie and Shea each had a single and double, with Bird collecting two hits and two RBI, while Bruns singled twice for the Eagles. Juliet Truslow took the loss, allowing four runs in 2+ innings on six hits and a walk.
