UMW Softball Splits Twinbill with #3 CNU; Gains Top Seed in CAC Tournament

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday doubleheader against third ranked Christopher Newport University to gain the top seed in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament next weekend. The Eagles won the opener, 5-3, before falling in the second, 18-1.

In game one, CNU scored one in the first and two in the second to grab an early advantage. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth inning, as Daylah Sawyer singled and scored on a passed ball, and Megan Hibbs drove in another run with a single.

The Eagles plated three runs in the sixth. Maggie Mrowka reached on an error and scored on another error, and Hannah Bruns singled and scored along with Caroline Bird on a throwing error. The Captains rallied in the seventh, but were ruled out as they batted out of order with two outs in the inning.

Hibbs gained the win, allowing no runs on four hits in five innings of relief, with six walks.

In the nightcap, the Captains erupted for 10 runs in the second inning and six in the fourth en route to an 18-1 victory. UMW's run came thanks to a solo home run from Rachel Porchie.

Porchie added a double to lead the offense for UMW. Juliet Truslow took the loss for the Eagles, allowing six earned runs in three innings.

UMW will host a weekend pod of the CAC Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Game times are 12:00, 2:00, and 4:00, with teams to be decided Monday after the final regular season games of the schedule.
