UMW Softball Splits Thursday Pair with Southern Va.

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Thursday doubleheader with Southern Virginia University in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground, falling in the opener, 2-1, before claiming the nightcap, 3-0. UMW moves to 18-15 on the season, and 8-2 in league play.

In the first game, the Eagles picked up a run in the second inning, as junior Danielle Newman singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a fly out before scoring on a ground out. The Knights scored a pair of runs in the fifth to take the lead and eventually the contest. UMW scratched out three hits, with Newman, Hannah Bruns, and Courtney Shea all providing singles.

Megan Hiobbs took the tough luck loss, allowing three hits and one run in three innings, with four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Eagles bounced back for a 3-0 victory. UMW jumped out quickly with two runs in the first, as Bruns singled and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a double from freshman Rachel Remer, who scored on a passed ball.

In the fourth, the Eagles added an insurance tally, as pitcher Juliet Truslow reached on an error and scored on another.

Remer singled and doubled to lead the Eagles, while Rachel Porchie added a double. Truslow spun a complete game shutout, allowing four hits in seven inngs, with no walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday as they host Christopher Newport in a 1 pm CAC doubleheader.
