UMW Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Frostburg State on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept their doubleheader at Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon. UMW won the first game, 8-5, in comeback fashion and took the second game 2-0 behind a stellar pitching performance by freshman Juliet Truslow. The Eagles improve to 17-14 overall, and 7-1 in the CAC.

UMW got on the board early in the game as Rachel Porchie started a two out rally in the first inning with a double to right center field. Juliet Truslow followed her up with a double of her own to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the first inning.

Frostburg St. answered back with three runs in the third inning to go up 3-1. The Eagles added another run in the fourth inning to get within one, 3-2. Danielle Newman singled to third base and then stole second base. Courtney Shea then reached on an error and Newman scored from second base to put UMW down one. The Bobcats then scored two runs in the fourth inning to go up 5-2.

From there, the Eagles bats exploded for six runs in the fifth inning. Caroline Bird led off with a single, Megan Hibbs followed up with another single, and Hannah Bruns singled to load the bases. Maggie Mrowka singled to bring home Bird, and then Porchie picked up an RBI on a groundout. Truslow singled home Bruns and then Newman singled home Mrowka. Courtney Shea gave UMW a three-run cushion as he singled to the left side to bring home two runs and put the Eagles up 8-5.

Megan Hibbs shut down the Bobcats lineup when she came in and got the win pitching four innings and gave up one unearned run.

In the second game, both the teams' bats were silent in the first two innings. UMW got on the board in the third inning as Rachel Remer led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Porchie singled through the left side to score Remer and take a 1-0 advantage.

Truslow kept the Frostburg St. bats at bay as they could not muster home a run. The Eagles added another run in the fifth inning as Shea led off with a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Bruns doubled to right center and brought home Shea to take a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats were shoutout on offense by Truslow.

Truslow threw a complete game shutout giving up just five hits and striking out five batters.

The Eagles will be back in action as they will host Southern Virginia on Friday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
