UMW Softball Sweeps Pair From Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader in Capital Athletic Conference play from visiting Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles won the opener, 4-2, before taking the nightcap, 3-2. UMW improves to 15-12 overall and 5-1 in CAC action.

In the first game, the Lions jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Eagles cut into the deficit in the second with a single run, Courtney Shea walked and scored on a single from pitcher Megan Hibbs

UMW took the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs, as Danielle Newman singled and scored on an error, and Hibbs singled to plate shortstop Caroline Bird. The Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth, as Rachel Porchie singled and scored on a Newman hit.

Newman led the way with three hits, a run scored and RBI, while Daylah Sawyer added a pair of hits in addition to Hibbs' two RBI singles. Hibbs gained the win, allowing two hits in six innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

In the second game, Harrisburg took the lead once again in the second, but UMW tied the score in the third. Hannah Bruns singled and scored on a double from Sawyer. The Eagles grabbed the lead in the fourth, as Shea doubled and scored on a double from Logan Gibson.

UMW added a big insurance run in the sixth, as Newman tripled and scored on a Shea sacrifice fly. The Lions threatened in the seventh, scoring one run, but the Eagles were able to close out the contest. 

The Eagles saw eight different players gain a hit, with the key hits coming on run-producers from Sawyer and Gibson. Juliet Truslow gained the win, scattering nine hits and two runs in seven innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.

UMW will return to action for a nonconference doubleheader at North Carolina Wesleyan on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
