UMW Softball Splits Wednesday CAC Doubleheader with Salisbury

The University of Mary Washington softball team roared back to top Salisbury University, 3-1, after falling in the opener of the teams' Wednesday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Battleground. The Eagles move to 13-12 overall and 3-1 in league play.

In the opener, Salisbury scored three runs in the first, four in the second, and one in the third to grab an 8-0 lead. The Eagles plated their run in the fourth as Daylah Sawyer singled and later scored on a double from Courtney Shea. Salisbury went on to score a pair of runs in the sixth to end the contest.

Shea led the Eagles' seven-hit attack with a single and a double. Megan Hibbs took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits.

In game two, Salisbury scored first with one in the first inning, but the Eagles answered with single runs in the second, third, and fourth. In the second, Sawyer was hit by a pitch before Rachel Porchie singled her to third. Rachel Remer followed with an RBI single to tie the score.

In the third inning, Porchie walked with the bases loaded to put UMW ahead to stay, and in the fourth, pitcher Juliet Truslow reached by getting hit by a pitch and scored on a passed ball.

The Eagles were led by freshmen middle infielders Maggie Mrowka and Rachel Remer, who each had a pair of hits, while Remer and Porchie added RBI. Truslow was again impressive, allowing just a leadoff solo home run and six hits in seven innings with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Penn State Harrisburg for senior day. First pitch is 1 p.m.
