UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader With Shenandoah on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader against Shenandoah University on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles lost the first game 10-5, and won the second game 4-0. UMW is now 9-10 overall. Freshman Juliet Truslow pitched a complete game shutout and also hit a home run in the second game.

In the first game, the two teams got out to a slow start as nobody could plate a run in the first two innings. Shenandoah got on the board in the third inning as they scored two runs. The Hornets added to their lead in the fourth inning and had a 4-0 lead.

UMW made a run in the fourth inning as they tied the game at 4-4. Rachel Porchie got the inning started with a single and Sawyer followed her up with a single of her own. Danielle Newman came to the plate and scored Porchie on a single to center field. Rachel Remer loaded the bases as she drew a walk and then Mady Marsden plated Sawyer and Newman to get within 1, 4-3. After two outs were recorded, Maggie Mrowka added a single to tie the game up at four a piece.

The Hornets scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 10-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs. They were only able to plate one run as Courtney Shea reached on a fielder's choice to score Sawyer.

UMW recorded 14 total hits in the game, with Sawyer and Newman both leading the team with three hits a piece.

The Eagles got the bats going early in the second game as they scored a run in each of the first two innings. Mrowka got it started in the first as she singled, then Newman doubled, and Sawyer grounded out to secure an RBI. Truslow put another run on the board in the second inning as she hit her first career home run and gave UMW a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, UMW added to their lead as Hannah Bruns led off with a triple and then Mrowka walked. Newman picked up the RBI on a groundout and then Sawyer reached on an error to score Mrowka and give UMW a 4-0 lead. From there, Truslow and the UMW defense held strong to gain their second shutout of the season.

Truslow pitched a complete game, giving up just seven hits, and striking out two batters. Truslow, Bruns, and Caroline Bird all recorded two hits a piece.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for a doubleheader scheduled at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
