UMW Softball Drops Saturday Doubleheader at Lynchburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games at the University of Lynchburg on Saturday, falling 2-0 and 13-3 to fall to 7-8 on the season.

In the opener, Lynchburg plated single runs in the first and third and held on for the shutout. Rachel Porchie had a single and double and Danielle Newman a pair of singles in UMW's five-hit attack. Junior Jamie Purtell took the tough loss, scattering 11 hits in six innings, allowing one earned run without a walk or strikeout.

In the second game, Lynchburg built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings, before the Eagles answered with a run in the third on a Maggie Mrowka RBI groundout. After the Hornets plated four runs in the third, the Eagles scored twice in the fourth, as Madi Marsden provided an RBI double and Caroline Bird followed with a run-scoring groundout, as the Eagles cut the deficit to 7-3.

The Hornets erupted for six runs in the fourth, and the Eagles weren't able to draw closer in the fifth to end the game.

Mabyn Perez, Newman, and Marsden had the Eagles' three hits in game two. Jena Calvitti took the loss, allowing seven eanred runs on three hits and five walks in 2.2 innings.

The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday when they host Gettysburg College at noon.
