UMW Softball Splits Thursday Twinbill With Bridgewater

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Thursday doubleheader with Bridgewater College, falling in the opener before winning the nightcap, 8-5. The Eagles move to 7-6 on the season.

In the opener, UMW fell behind as Bridgewater scored twice in the second and once in the third, and once again in the fifth. Hannah Bruns doubled, and the Eagles scattered singles from Maggie Mrowka, Rachel Porchie, Courtney Shea, and Caroline Bird.

Junior Jamie Purtell took the loss, allowing one earned run on five hits in three innings with two walks and a strikeout.

Mary Washington erupted for seven runs on 10 hits in the first inning of game two. Bruns, Mrowka, and Daylah Sawyer all singled before Porchie delivered a sacrifice fly to open the gates. UMW then rattled off seven straight singles, chasing the starting pitcher. Bruns and Mrowka each had two hits in the inning.

After Bridgewater added a run in the third, UMW answered with one of its own on an RBI single from Sawyer. Bridgewater added two runs in the sixth, but were retired without damage in the seventh.

The Eagles rattled out 15 hits, including three each from Bruns and Mrowka. Sawyer, Rachel Remer, and Mabyn Perez each added a pair of hits. Jena Calvitti gained the win, scattering 10 hits and four earned runs in the complete game. She walked four and struck out three.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles visit Lynchburg at 1:30 pm.
