The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a 5-2 decision to ninth ranked Coe College before downing Waynesburg University, 10-9, in an action-packed contest on Thursday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles move to 4-3 on the season.
Against Coe, the Kohawks jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the second inning, but the Eagles halved their deficit with a run in the fourth. Freshman Rachel Remer doubled to left centerfield, and came around to scoe on a single from sophomore Rachel Porchie.
Coe went ahead 3-1 in the fifth, but again the Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Morgan Mumford singled and came around to score on an RBI single from Remer. Coe plated a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to run the final to 5-2.
Remer's single and double, with a run and RBI, led the offense. Junior Megan Hibbs took the loss, allowing two earned runs in 6.2 innings on 10 hits and one walk, with four strikeouts.
In the second game against Waynesburg, the lead swung back and forth multiple times before the Eagles came away with a 10-9 win. Waynesburg scored a pair of runs in the first before the Eagles plated a run in the second on a home run from freshman Logan Gibson. UMW scored three in the third to take the lead, with the key hit being a two-run triple by junior Danielle Newman.
Waynesburg tied the score with two runs in the fourth, but the Eagles went back ahead with another run in the bottom of the frame. Gibson's double was the key hit.
The game continued to go back and forth in the late innings. Waynesburg scored three times in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead, but UMW came right back with three of their own to regain the lead at 8-7. The Eagles added two more in the sixth, with a Remer double scoring one run, to take a 10-7 lead. Waynesburg scored twice in the seventh before UMW found the final out of the game.
Newman and Gibson led the Eagles with two hits and two RBI apiece. Junior Jamie Purtell gained the win, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of relief, without a walk or strikeout.
The Eagles will close their week in Myrtle Beach on Friday morning.
