UMW Softball Drops Doubleheader to Frostburg St.

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped their doubleheader to Frostburg St. University on Friday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles fall to 14-21-1 overall, and 3-8-1 in the CAC. UMW lost the first one in the tenth inning 3-2, and then lost the second 7-3.

The Bobcats got on top early as they scored a run, off of a single, in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. UMW answered that run with two of their own in the bottom half of the first inning. Caroline Callahan led off and reached on an error. Hannah Bruns then singled, and Megan Hibbs came up to hit home Callahan to tie the game at one. From there, Morgan Mumford cranked a double to center field that brought home Bruns to take a 2-1 lead.

Both teams cooled down as they failed to score a run in the next four innings. Frostburg St. broke that streak as they scored a run in the sixth to tie the game at two. The game went to extra innings and the Bobcats scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning.

Kara Deppe pitched 10.0 innings, only giving up one earned run, and struck out 12 batters. UMW collected 12 hits in the ball game, as Bruns and Mumford has three each to lead the team.

In the second game, the Bobcats scored one in the first inning again to take the lead. Frostburg St. added to their lead in the third inning as they scored three, and then added another run in the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Bobcats pushed across two more runs in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead.

UMW rallied in the seventh inning as they scored three runs but couldn't get any closer. Malia Rogers got it started as she singled and then Jena Calvitti singled after her. Raven Oten singled home Rogers to put the game at 7-1. Ashley Caffee delivered a double that scored both Calvitti and Oten to bring the Eagles within four, 7-3. The Bobcats closed the game out and won 7-3.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they will host their last doubleheader of the year against Southern Virginia at 12 p.m.
