The University of Mary Washington softball team used a gem from junior Kara Deppe in taking a 1-0 nine-inning victory at Wesley College on Thursday aftenoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. After the games were started late, the second game was called after five innings with the score tied at 5-5, and will be counted as a tie.
In the opener, the game stood scoreless for eight full innings, before the Eagles scratched across the lone run of the game in the ninth. Malia Rogers led off the ninth with a double, and moved to third on a bunt single from Kassie Bender. After Courtney Shea was intentionally walked to load the bases, freshman Daylah Sawyer connected for a sacrifice fly to center field, as Rogers scored.
Deppe pitched nine scoreless innings, striking out a season-high 15 batters while allowing four walks and four hits. Bender and Danielle Newman each had two hits for the Eagles.
In the second game, the Eagles jumped ahead with three runs in the second inning. Sawyer was again a factor, as her two-run double scored Megan Hibbs and Rogers. Sawyer would score an unearned run on a passed ball.
Wesley scored once in the third, and the Eagles scored once in the fourth, as Bender provided an RBI single. Wesley rallied for three runs in the fourth to tie the score, and each team scored once in the fifth. With darkness set in, the game was called and considered a tie.
Callahan, Sawyer, Newman, and Bender all had hits for the Eagles. Hibbs started and pitched three innings, allowing three eanred runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Deppe pitched two innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Eagles will return to action on Sunday when they host Christopher Newport University at noon, weather permitting.
