UMW Softball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader from Lancaster Bible

Junior pitcher Kara Deppe allowed just one hit in five innings in the opener, and senior Caroline Callahan collected three hits in the nightcap, as the4 University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Lancaster Bible College, 11-0 and 8-1, on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 11-11 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles jumped ahead with three in the first, keyed by sophomore Jessica Huber's run-producing triple. In the second, UMW used a pair of walks and singles from Danielle Newman and Deppe to add three more, and added two in the third, with Hannah Bruns providing a triple. The Eagles plated three in the fourth, on a pair of hits and a pair of errors.

Bruns and Newman each had two hits to pace the Eagle offense. Deppe struck out 11 in five innings, allowing one hit and a pair of walks in gaining the victory.

In the nightcap, the Eagles scored once in the second on an RBI triple by Jena Calvitti, and once in the third on a triple from Newman and RBI single from Daylah Sawyer. Callahan and Cortney Shea singled in the fifth, and the Eagles plated three in the sixth keyed by singles from Amy Sykes, Callahan and Newman.

Callahan had three hits and Newman two for the Eagles, with Calvitti gaining the win allowing no runs on two hits with five strikeouts. Megan Hibbs struck out seven in 2.2 innings of relief, with one earned run on one hit.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 3 pm.
