The University of Mary Washington softball team split its doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite University on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. UMW won the first game 1-0 in eight innings, and lost the second game 5-1. The Eagles are now 9-11 overall.
The first game was a pitcher's duel in the first seven innings. In the eighth inning, Malia Rogers started on second base and was advanced to third base on a single to left field by Daylah Sawyer. Courtney Shea got the game-winning RBI on a fielder's choice to second base and it scored Rogers from third.
Kara Deppe threw 8.0 shutout innings on her way to a win, striking out 11 batters. Danielle Newman went 3-3 in the first game while also drawing a walk. Deppe hit a double and Sawyer drilled a triple in the game.
In the second game, UMW got on the board first as they scored a run in the second inning. Sawyer led off the inning and got hit by a pitch. Ashley Caffee grounded into a fielder's choice, but EMU couldn't get an out so UMW had runners on first and second with no outs. Megan Hibbs laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Amy Sykes got Sawyer in as she bunted and the defense made an error to bring in Sawyer.
The Royals took the lead in the sixth inning as they scored three runs, and then added two more runs in the seventh inning to win the second game 5-1.
Hannah Bruns, Newman, and Courtney Shea all recorded hits in the second game for the Eagles.
UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Randolph-Macon for a doubleheader scheduled at 3 p.m.
