UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader at Shenandoah

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Shenandoah University. The Eagles won the first game 3-1 and lost the second game 9-1. UMW is now 8-10 overall.

In the first game, the Hornets got ahead early 1-0 in the first inning. UMW then got on the board in the third inning. 

Caroline Callahan led off the inning with a walk and then Hannah Bruns hit a bunt single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Danielle Newman then doubled to left center to bring home Callahan and Buns and take a 2-1 lead. Newman scored later in the inning as Malia Rogers singled her home and UMW led 3-1.

Kara Deppe settled in after the first inning and allowed only five hits the rest of the game and gave up zero runs. Deppe pitched 7.0 innings, striking out two hitters, on the way to her seventh win. Newman went 4-4 from the plate in the first game.

In the second game, Shenandoah scored three runs in the first inning to take the early lead. UMW got a run back in the third inning as Callahan led off with a single and then stole second base to get in scoring position. Bruns advanced her to third on a ground ball and Newman brought Callahan home on a ground out.

UMW failed to score in the next two innings, while Shenandoah tacked on six runs to win the game 9-1. 

Rachel Porchie, Jamie Purtell, Megan Hibbs, and Callahan recorded the Eagles' four hits in the second game. 

Purtell pitched 2.0 innings allowing zero runs in the second game.

UMW will be back in action on Sunday as they will host Eastern Mennonite in a doubleheader that will start at 12 p.m.
