UMW Softball Splits Thursday Doubleheader in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Thursday games in Myrtle Beach, S.C., falling to Medaille University, 5-4, and topping Wilkes University, 10-2. The Eagles move to 5-7 on the season.

In the Medaille game, freshman Rachel Porchie had a pair of hits, while senior Malia Rogers and freshman Morgan Mumford each doubled and sophomore Hannah Bruns tripled. Jamie Purtell allowed one hit and three unearned runs in 1.1 innings with two walks, and Jena Calvitti allowed two unearned runs on two hits in 2.2 innings. Megan Hibbs pitched the final two innings, with two hits and no runs allowed with three strikeouts.

The Eagles closed the day by topping Wilkes University, 10-2, in six innings. UMW scored two in the first, five in the second, and three in the sixth. Bruns went 4-4 to lead the offense, and Porchie went 2-2 with three walks and five RBI. Danielle Newman and Kaitlin Kean each had two hits as well as part of the 13 hit attack.

Kara Deppe allowed one earned run on three hits in six innings to gain the win, with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will conclude its games in South Carolina on Friday.
