UMW Softball Drops Doubleheader vs. Lynchburg College on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington softball team was defeated in both games of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to Lynchburg College at the Battleground Complex in Fredericksburg, VA. The score of the first game was 14-3, and the second game 13-1. The Eagles fall to 1-5 on the season.

In the first game, Lynchburg pushed across a run in the first inning to take the lead 1-0. In the bottom of the first inning, Hannah Bruns led off the inning with a single to left and then Caroline Callahan walked to put the Eagles in business. Hannah Hautz then came up and drilled a home run to left field that put UMW up 3-1.

The Hornets managed to push across at least one run every inning. They scored two in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth, and six in the fifth. Hautz finished the game with two hits and a stolen base. Kara Deppe pitched for the Eagles and struck out three batters in 3.1 innings.

In the second game, the Hornets scored two runs in the first inning. UMW got on the board in the second inning as Hautz singled to center and Malia Rogers reached first base on an error. Morgan Mumford laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Ashley Caffee delivered a base hit to left field and scored Hautz to get the game at 2-1.

Lynchburg added seven runs in the third inning and then pushed two more across in the fourth to extend the lead to 12-1. The Hornets scored their last run of the game in the fifth and held the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth to win 13-1.

Bruns, Callahan, and Courtney Shea all had base hits in the second game. Jena Calvitti pitched 3.1 innings and struck out two batters. Megan Hibbs pitched 1.2 innings and gave up three hits.

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to take on Randolph College at 3:30 p.m.
