UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader with Wesley on Senior Day

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader with Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley College on Saturday at the Battleground Complex. The Eagles move to 20-16 overall and 5-5 in CAC play.

In the opener, Wesley built a 7-0 lead by the fourth inning. The Eagles scored their first run of the game in the sixth when Jessica Huber hit a homer to left field. Both teams scored two more runs in the seventh, bringing the final to 9-3.

Erin Stinson took the loss for the Eagles, striking out nine and walking six.

In the second game, the Eagles scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Hannah Bruns doubled to center before advancing to third on an Emma Rakowski single. Danielle Newman followed with a rare inside the park home run when she crushed one off the fence in center field.

Wesley scored one in the second and third to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Eagles answered with four runs in the third to extend the lead to 7-2.

Rakowski and Newman walked before Kristen Lundquist bunted for a single to load the bases. Kara Deppe followed with a single to drive in Rakowski and Newman. The Eagles scored their third run off a sacrifice bunt from Courtney Shea and the fourth off a single from Caroline Callahan.

Wesley scored one in the fourth, but the Eagles tallied two more in the sixth to hold a 9-3 advantage. Bruns started things off with a triple, before Huber drove her in off a single to center field. Rakowski and Newman both walked again, and Kristen Lundquist drove in Huber at the next at bat.

Wesley scored a run in the seventh to cap the scoring at 9-4. Deppe gained the win for the Eagles, striking out 10 and walking four.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they visit Frostburg at 3 pm.
