UMW Softball Drops Wednesday Doubleheader at CNU

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a Wednesday doubleheader at Christopher Newport University in Capital Athletic Conference action, falling 10-2 and 9-1. The Eagles fall to 19-15 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles jumped on top with the first run in the second. Jessica Huber led off with a single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice. Pitcher Kara Deppe helped her own cause with an RBI single to put the Eagles on top.

The Captains erupted for five runs in the third, all of which were unearned. They added three more in the fourth before UMW tallied one in the fifth. Kristen Lundquist doubled to lead off the inning, and Amy Sykes added a single to put runners at the corners for Caroline Callahan, whose RBI single cut the margin to 8-2. CNU would add two in the fifth to close the game out at 10-2.

Six different Eagles gained hits. Deppe took the loss, allowing no earned runs on nine hits in four innings, with four walks and three strikeouts.

In the second game, the Captains scored two in the first and two in the second, before the Eagles scored one in the third. Sykes reached on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and to third on a wild pitch. Callahan followed by knocking in Sykes on a misplay by the Captains.

CNU would go on to score four in the fourth and one in the fifth for the 9-1 win.

Callahan, Hannah Bruns, and Malia Rogers collected hits for the Eagles. Erin Stinson took the loss.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they host Wesley College for a 1 pm conference doubleheader.
