UMW Softball Sweeps Saturday CAC Twinbill From Penn State Harrisburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Saturday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader from Penn State Harrisburg, winning the opener, 8-0 in five innings, and taking the second game with a walkoff in the seventh, 2-1. The Eagles improve to 18-12 overall, and 3-1 in CAC play.

In the opener, the Eagles scored a run in the first, as Caroline Callahn reached on an error and scored on an error on a ball hit by Hannah Hautz. UMW scored in the second, as Hannah Bruns plated Jessica Huber on an RBI single.

The Eagles broke the game open with four runs in the third. Huber plated Malia Rogers with a single, and Mikie Williams followed with a three run home run. The Eagles added two in the fourth on a two-run double from Rogers, and the Eagles got three outs defensively to end game one in five innings.

Williams led UMW in the opener with a single and homer, with three RBI. Kara Deppe gained the win in relief with four shutout innings with seven strikeouts and no walks while allowing three hits.

The Eagles scored once in the first of game two, as Hannah Hautz walked and scored on a Huber single. The Knights answered with a run in the fifth on an unearned run.

UMW prevailed in the bottom of the seventh, as Williams led off getting hit by a pitch, Danielle Newman singled, and Kristen Lundquist singled to load the bases. Hautz capped the game with an RBI single to end the game in dramatic fashion.

Newman had two hits to lead the Eagles. Deppe gained the win in relief, walking one and striking out one in two innings of relief.

The Eagles will host York College of Pa on Sunday for another CAC doubleheader starting at noon.
