UMW Softball Drops Twinbill at #10 Va. Wesleyan

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games on Wednesday at 10th ranked Virginia Wesleyan College, falling by scores of 3-0 and 7-3. UMW falls to 15-9 on the season.

In the opener, the Marlins were able to push across three third inning runs in the only scoring in the game, using a pair of walks and a pair of their six hits in the game for the game's lone runs.

Hannah Bruns, Emma Rakowski, and Amy Sykes collected the Eagles' hits. Kara Deppe took the loss for UMW, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings, with eight walks and five strikeouts.

In the second game, UMW fell behind, 1-0, in the first, but answered with three runs in the third. Jessica Huber led off with a single and advanced to third on an error. Danielle Newman reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Huber, and an error allowed Kaitlin Kean to score. A Malia Rogers RBI groundout produced run number three.

The Marlins added a run in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, then pulled ahead with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Huber and Kean collected hits for UMW. Deppe took the loss with two innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Salisbury University in the Capital Athletic Conference openers for both teams. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
