UMW Softball Sweeps Bridgewater to Improve to 13-5 on the Season

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Bridgewater College on Thursday evening, winning by scores of 7-2 and 5-0, to improve to 13-5 on the season.

In the opener, UMW erupted for five second inning runs to gain control. Malia Rogers opened the inning with a single, and moved to third on a hit from Caitlin Shea, who would steal second base. Rogers scored on an error, and after two outs were recorded, Lindsey Aylor singled to load the bases, and Danielle Newman plated Shea with a single. Hannah Bruns followed with a bases clearing double.

In the fifth, UMW added another run, as Rogers and Shea singled and Bruns walked to load the bases, and Amy Sykes followed with a single to score a run. Kristen Lundquist and Newman singled, and Hannah Hautz singled to plate Bruns.

Newman and Rogers each had three hits for the Eagles, while Bruns and Shea each had two.

Erin Stinson gained the win, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings, with four walks and eight strikeouts.

In the second game, UMW won by a 5-0 margin, scoring four runs in the fourth. After a Rogers single and Kara Deppe walk, Kaitlin Kean reached on an error to load the bases, and Kate Chisholm's grounder would lead to a four-run error by the visitors.

UMW scored in the fifth, as Newman doubled and Hautz drove her home with a single.

Six different Eagles had hits in the nightcap. Kara Deppe gained the win, allowing three hits in seven innings, with no walks and ten strikeouts.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they host Shenandoah University for a noon doubleheader.
