UMW Softball Tops Wentworth, Ursinus on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington softball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology and Ursinus College on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach, S.C., to improve to 9-5 on the season. UMW topped Wentworth, 11-3, before edging Ursinus, 9-6.

The Eagles opened their win against Wentworth with eight first inning runs, and added two in the third, and three more in the seventh.

Caroline Callahan led the way with five hits in six at bats for the Eagles, scoring three runs and driving in one. Hannah Hautz had two doubles, and Danielle Newman had a single and triple. Caitlin Shea and Emma Rakowski each added two hits as well.

Jessica Calvitti opened in the circle for UMW, allowing one earned run on two hits with five walks. Erin Stinson gained the win in relief, allowing no hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

In the win over Ursinus, the Eagles scored one in the first, but fell behind 2-1 after the bottom of the inning. UMW vaulted ahead with a five run third, but the Bears cut into the margin with two runs in the third and another in the fifth.

The Eagles scored three runs in the seventh, and allowed just one in the bottom of the frame for the three-run win.

Newman, Shea, and Kate Chisholm each had two hits for the Eagles, with Jamie Purtrell hitting a double and Malia Rogers a triple.

Kara Deppe allowed two earned runs in six innings on four hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will close out their trip with a pair of games in Myrtle Beach on Thursday.
