UMW Softball Splits Saturday Twinbill with Dickinson

The University of Mary Washington softball team ran its record to 4-4 on the season, with a doubleheader split with Dickinson College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles won the opener, 8-0, before falling, 5-3, in game two.

After working around a single and a walk in the top of the first, UMW took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Danielle Newman singled, stole second and third, and scored on an illegal pitch. Hannah Hautz followed with a double but was left stranded.

The Eagles added three runs in the second. Emma Rakowski led off with a single, and was advanced to second. Hannah Bruns followed with a single to put runners at the corners, and Newman followed with an RBI single. Caroline Callahan singled to load the bases, and two runs came in on an error.

In the fourth, Newman and Callahan singled and Hautz was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Jessica Huber followed with a hit by pitch to plate the Eagles fifth run.

In the fifth, Britnee Haynes singled and advanced to second on an error. Another error put runners on first and second, and Newman singled to load the bases. Hautz walked with the bases juiced to score one run, and Huber was hit again to plate another. Amy Sykes reached on an error to score Callahan.

Newman went 4-4 with four runs scored and an RBI for the Eagles, while Callahan and Haynes each had two hits. Sophomore Kara Deppe allowed three hits in five innings, walking two and striking out three in gaining the win.

In the nightcap, Dickinson scored once in the third and four times in the fifth to build a 5-0 lead. The Eagles clawed back with three in the bottom of the fifth. 

Deppe reached on an error, and pinch runner Huber reached third on a Newman single. Callahan reached on a single to score Huber. Newman scored o a groundout, and Malia Rogers provided an infield single to score Callahan.

Callahan and Rogers had four of the Eagles' five hits, with newman providing the other. Erin Stinson took the loss for UMW, scattering seven hits in seven innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C., when they face Randolph College at 9:30 am and Regis University at 1:30 p.m.
