UMW Splits Doubleheader at N.C. Wesleyan

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader at N.C. Wesleyan to move to 3-3 on the season. The Eagles dropped the opener, 6-2, and won the second, 7-2.

In game one, the Eagles jumped on the board early, up 2-0 in the first. Hannah Hautz reached first on a sacrifice bunt, as Caroline Callahan advanced to third and Danielle Newman scored. Callahan scored when Amy Sykes reached on a fielder's choice.

Both teams went scoreless untill N.C. Wesleyan scored four runs in the fifth to take the lead. N.C. Wesleyan scored two more in the sixth to cap the scoring for the game at 6-2.

The Eagles offense was led by two hits from Emma Rakowski. Kara Deppe took the loss for the Eagles, allowing six runs in seven innings with four walks and six strikeouts.

In the second game, both teams went scoreless until the third inning when the Eagles scored three runs to take the lead. The first run came when Sykes was walked with the bases loaded to score Newman. Malia Rogers then singled, driving in Lindsey Aylor to put the Eagles up 2-0. Kaitlin Kean followed with an RBI as she drove in Hannah Hautz.

The Battling Bishops responded with one run in the third to cut the deficit to 3-1.

In the fourth with two outs, Kristen Lundquist drilled a double to center field, driving in Hautz and Hannah Bruns to take a 5-1 lead.

N.C. Wesleyan scored again to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Eagles scored again to go back up 6-2 in the fifth when Bruns singled to center to score Rogers.

The Eagles picked up where they left off in the sixth when Sykes doubled to center to score Callahan, giving the Eagles a 7-2 advantage.

Lundquist and Sykes each had two RBI, while Rogers and Bruns each drove in one to lead the Eagles at the plate. Erin Stinson picked up the win for the Eagles, allowing two runs with three walks.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday as they host Dickinson for a doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
