UMW Softball Splits Pair at Lynchburg on Sunday to Move to 2-2 on Young Season

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Sunday doubleheader at Lynchburg College, to move to 2-2 on the season. The Eagles won  the opener, 3-2, before falling in game two, 13-3.

In game one, the Eagles jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the second. Amy Sykes singled and advanced to second on a Caitlin Shea walk. Emma Rakowski followed by reaching on an error that allowed Sykes to score, and Shea to advance to third. After a walk to Danielle Newman, Caroline Callahan provided an RBI groundout.

The Hornets scored in the second on a passed ball, but UMW got the run back with a run in the third. Hannah Hautz doubled, and scored on a Britnee Haynes RBI single. Lynchburg scored once in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2, but couldn't find the tying run, as sophomore Kara Deppe kept the hosts hitless through the final three frames.

Deppe allowed two earned runs on five hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out 10.

In the nightcap, Lynchburg scored nine runs in the first, and added another in the second. UMW answered with three runs in the third. Hautz and Sykes each then walked with the bases loaded.
