UMW Softball Falls to Frostburg, 3-2, in CAC Tourney Elimination Game

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Frostburg State University on Friday on day two of the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by Salisbury University. The Eagles close the season with a fourth place finish in the conference tournament.

While the game remained scoreless through the first two innings, both teams provided threats offensively. The Bobcats left the bases loaded in the second, and UMW stranded runners in scoring position in the second and third.

Frostburg scored a run in the third with a single and double, and added another in the fourth with three hits and a stolen base.

In the top of the fifth, the Eagles halved the deficit, as Emily Briggs singled and came around to score on a Stefannie Asselanis double. UMW was able to collect two hits in the sixth, but couldn't find the tying run.

UMW did find the tying run in the seventh, however, as Asselanis led off with a triple, and scored on a Maia Rogers single.

The Bobcats started the bottom of the seventh by reaching on an error and an infield single. After the runners advanced on a groundout, Frostburg won on a sacrifice fly.

Asselanis led the Eagles with four hits, including two doubles and a triple. Rogers had an RBI single and a walk. Stinson took the loss, allowing three runs on 10 hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles conclude the season with a record of 13-30.
