UMW Softball Drops Sunday Twinbill to NC Wesleyan

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. Game scores were 4-2 and 4-1. The Eagles drop to 11-23 on the season.

In the first game, the Battling Bishops jumped to a 4-0 lead, scoring three in the second inning and one in the third.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Battling Bishops failed to throw out Caroline Callahan as she stole second, and Amy Sykes advanced home to score the Eagles' first run. After a Lindsey Aylor single, Olivia Tatara drove in Callahan to cut the deficit to 4-2. Both squads would go scoreless the final two innings.

Ashton Fernyhough picked up the loss for the Eagles, giving up one earned-run in 2.0 innings pitched. Courtney Merson pitched 5.0 innings, striking out four, while giving up only two hits and no earned-runs.

In the second game, both teams went scoreless the first two innings. In the third, N.C. Wesleyan scored two and the Eagles scored off an Emma Rakowski single.

The Battling Bishops scored again in the fifth and in the seventh to cap the scoring at 4-1. Freshman Kara Deppe took the loss for the Eagles, pitching 7.0 innings, striking out 10 and giving up only one earned-run.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday at 2:30 pm as they play host to CNU for a CAC doubleheader.
