UMW Softball Splits Sunday CAC Twinbill at York

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Sunday doubleheader at York College in Capital Athletic Conference action, falling in the opener, 10-2, before winning the nightcap in eight innings, 3-2. The split keeps the Eagles at .500 in conference play at 3-3.

In the opener, the Eagles scored once in the first inning to go ahead. Olivia Tatara singled and advanced to third on a single before scoring on an error. But the Spartans responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, and added single runs in the third and fourth, as the lead swelled to 6-1.

In the sixth, the Eagles got a run back as Emily Briggs connected for a home run. A home run and bases-clearing double gave the Spartans an eight-run cushion in the botto of the sixth to end the game.

In addition to the Briggs home run and Tatara's single, Malia Rogers had a pair of hits for UMW. Courtney Merson took the loss for the Eagles, allowing four runs on four hits.

In the second game, York scored one in the first and one in the third, and the Eagles bats stayed quiet until the sixth inning, when they tied the score. With two outs, Briggs singled before Hannah Hautz followed with a two-run homer to knot the score.

In extra innings, UMW found the game winner in the eighth, as Emma Rakowski singled home Rogers, and the Spartans went down in order in the bottom of the eighth.

The Eagles rapped out 10 hits, including two from Allison Griffith, and a double from Alexis Hall in addition to Hautz's home run.

Freshman Kara Deppe gained the win for the Eagles, allowing just two hits and one earned run in eight innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they host Southern Virginia University for a CAC doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
