UMW Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Wesley

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader in Capital Athletic Conference action at Wesley College on Saturday in Dover, Del. The Eagles fell in the first game, 5-4, but responded to win game two, 11-1.

In game one, the Eagles fell behind, 3-0, in the first inning, but battled back with two runs in the second. Hannah Hautz doubled, and scored on a triple from Emily Briggs, and Briggs scored a triple from Amy Sykes.

After Wesley scored one in the third, UMW tird the score with two in the fifth inning. Olivia Tatara hit a one-out double, and scored on a Stefannie Asselanis single. Asselanis scored on a run-producing single from Hautz.

Wesley scored the game winner in the bottom of the seventh. Hautz singled and doubled and Briggs singled and tripled to lead the Eagles at the plate. Erin Stinson allowed eight hits in six innings in taking the loss, walking two and striking out two.

The Eagle offense erupted for 11 runs in the nightcap, starting with two runs in the first. Tatara opened with a walk and stole second. After a Malia Rogers single, Tatara scored on a single from Hautz, and Rogers scored on a double from Briggs.

The Eagles scored five in the third, with two runs scoring on a fielding error and Asselanis clearing the bases with a three-run triple. Briggs added another run in the fourth, scoring on a fielder's choice.

In the seventh, Rakowski and Tatara hit doubles before Rogers drove home both with a single. Rogers would come around to score on a single from Hautz.

Hautz connected for four hits and two RBI, and Tatara had three hits and three runs scored to lead the Eagles. Freshman Kara Deppe gained the win, scattering nine hits in seven innings, with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 3:00 p.m.
