UMW Softball Drops Doubleheader to Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting Virginia Wesleyan College, 6-2 and 10-1, on Thursday at the Battleground.

In game one, the Marlins scored once in the second and twice in the third, and added two in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Eagles responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Amy Sykes singled, and scored on an Emily Briggs double. Briggs came home on an Emma Rakowski single.

Briggs' RBI double and run scored led the Eagle offense, which collected five hits. Erin Stinson took the loss for the Eagles, allowing six runs in seven innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

In the second contest, the Marlins jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the first, before UMW answeredf with one in the bottom of the frame. Stefannie Asselanis doubled and scored on an error.

The Marlins added three runs in the second and third, and single runs in the fourth and fifth. Asselanis' double and a Malia Rogers single were the Eagles' lone hits in the game.

Freshman Kara Deppe took the loss for UMW, alllowing five runs in 1.2 innings, on five hits, with two walks and a strikeout.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Lynchburg College at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
