UMW Softball Drops Pair to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday. Game scores were 4-3 and 11-5.

In game one, the Eagles owned a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Malia Rogers singled and drove in Emily Briggs and Steffanie Asselanis. The Eagles scored in the fifth off another Rogers' single to take a 3-1 lead.

The Diplomats responded with three runs in the seventh inning to secure the win. Erin Stinson allowed one run in six innings, striking out two, and walking just one. Courtney Merson took the loss for the Eagles, allowing three earned runs and four hits.

In the second game, the Eagles jumped to a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. Rogers homered to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage in the second, and Asselanis singled to right field to score Olivia Tatara in the third. The Diplomats answered with six runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.

The Eagles cut the deficit to 6-4 in the fourth. Rogers stayed hot at the plate and doubled to score Hannah Hautz, and Emily Rakowski drove in Rogers in the next at bat. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth before Franklin & Marshall scored five more runs in the sixth to take an 11-4 lead. Caroline Callahan drove in the last run of the game in the sixth, bringing the final score to 11-5.

Kara Deppe took the loss for the Eagles, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings, while striking out five and walking four. Merson pitched 1.2 innings allowing five runs, and Stinson pitched two innings allowing two runs.

The Eagles are back in action on Monday when they visit Bridgewater College at 3:30 p.m.
