UMW Softball Splits Thursday Twinbill at Shenandoah

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a Thursday afternoon doubleheader at Shenandoah University, winning 3-2 and falling 4-1. UMW moves to 3-7 on the season.

The Eagles plated three runs in the first inning and held on for a 3-2 victory in game one. Emma Rakowski provided a pair of RBI and Amy Sykes one in the frame. Sykes, Olivia Tarata, Rakowski and Emily Briggs each had a pair of hits to lead the Eagles.

Erin Stinson gained the win, allowing two runs (one earned) in 5.1 innings, while Courtney Merson came on in relief for 1.2 innings. The duo combined to allow five hits.

In the nightcap, the Hornets scored twice in the first and twice in the fourth en route to the 4-1 win. Freshman Kara Deppe pitched six innings, striking out three and allowing seven hits. Tatara, Malia Rogers, and Rakowski each had a hit for UMW.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Franklin & Marshall College at noon.
