UMW Softball Splits Games in Myrtle Beach vs. Eastern, WV State

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a pair of games in Myrtle Beach on Thursday, falling to West Virginia State, 6-5, before beating Eastern, 10-2.

In the opener, the Eagles built a 2-1 advantage with an RBI double from Stefannie Asselanis and a run producing single from Emily Briggs. UMW held the lead until the sixth, when the Yellowjackets plated five runs on four hits.

In the bottom of the seventh, UMW scored three runs to cut the final deficit to 6-5. Olivia Tatara had a one-out single, and scored on Asselanis' triple. Briggs plated Asselanis with an infield single, and scored herself on an error.

Asselanis had a single, double, and triple, driving in two and scoring one. Tatara and Malia Rogers had a single and double, and Briggs had two run-producing hits.

In the Eastern game, UMW fell behind 1-0 in the first, but rebounded with three runs in the second. Lindsey Aylor had a two-run double followed by a Tatara RBI double in the frame.  Eastern cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth, but the Eagles rallied late.

Tatara produced a two-run double in the sixth to put UMW ahead, 5-2. In the seventh, Rogers had an RBI single and Zoie Patrick added a two-run double, before Caroline Callahan posted a two-run single to cap the scoring at 10-2.

Kaitlin Kean had three hits to lead the Eagles while Tatara doubled twice and Aylor added a pair of singles. Courtney Merson gained the win for the Eagles, allowing one earned run in seven innings, with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

Mary Washington will be back in action on March 10 when they visit Shenandoah University at 3:00 p.m.
