Williams' Sixth Inning Three-Run Homer Leads UMW Softball Past York, 6-4, in CAC Tourney 1st Round

Senior Hannah Williams hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the University of Mary Washington softball team to a 6-4 victory over York College in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday morning. The Eagles will face Christopher Newport University at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the Eagles plated the first run of the game in the third, as Brittany Scites walked, advanced to second on a single from Alex Tenney, and scored on an error.

York answered in the fourth with three runs on an RBI double and home run. Scites cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth, hitting a home run to left center, but York added a run in the sixth on an RBI single.

The Eagles turned things around in the sixth, as Hannah Hautz reached on an error and advanced to second on another error. Olivia Tatara scored Hautz with an RBI single, and, with two on and no outs, Williams connected for a three-run homer to put the Eagles ahead, 6-4.

Freshman Courtney Merson gained the save by retiring the Spasrtans in the seventh with a walk and a strikeout. Ashton Ferneyhough gained the win for UMW, allowing one earned run on three hits in 2.1 innings of relief with one strikeout.
