The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Wesley College, taking the opener before falling 12-9 in the finale. The Eagles move to 15-11 on the season.
In the opening game, the Eagles fell, behind, 1-0, in the fourth inning, but scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Alex Tenney led off with a single, and moved to second on a groundout and to third on a single from Hannah Hautz. After Hautz stole second, Olivia Tatara walked to load the bases. Two runs scored on a popup from Hannah Otterman, and Stefannie Asselanis doubled to plate Tatara.
Wesley cuit the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth, but UMW scored an insurance run in the bottom of the frame, as Otterman doubled, and pinch runner Caroline Callahan scored on a Hannah Williams single.
Tenney and Otterman ed the Eagles with two hits each, and Asselanis doubled. Otterman gained the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings, with two strikeouts and two walks.
Game two saw the Wolverines score twice in the first, but UMW answered with one in the bottom of the inning. Brittany Scites singled, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a Hannah Hautz RBI single.
Wesley scored four in the top of the second to take a 6-1 lead, but the Eagles scored three in the bottom of the inning. Zoie Patrick and Hannah Williams led off with singles to put runners at the corners. Callahan followed with a sacrifice bunt to score Patrick. Scites followed with a single to plate Williams, and Scites scored on an RBI groundout from Hautz.
Both teams scored twice in the fourth, with UMW's runs coming on a two-run double from Tatara. Wesley scored four in the fifth to take a 12-6 lead. The Eagles scored twice in the sixth, as Emily Briggs and Tatara scored on a two-run double from Asselanis. UMW scored once in the seventh on a Hautz RBI double.
Williams led the Eagles with three RBI in game two, while Scites, Hautz, and Tatara each had two hits.
The Eagles will visit Frostburg State University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in another CAC doubleheader.
