UMW Softball Sweeps Southern Virginia in CAC Twinbill, 16-0 and 16-1

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept Southern Virginia University, 16-0 and 16-1, on Thursday evening in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 14-10 on the season, surpassing last year's win total.

In the opener, UMW scored six runs in the first, and five in both the second and third for the win. With the bases loaded in the first, Malia Rogers, Hannah Williams, and Zoie Patrick each singled to score runs, with Patrick knocking in two.

In the second, Hannah Hautz provided an RBI double before scoring on a Britnee Haynes groundout. Hannah Otterman and Malia Rogers singled to load the bases, and Williams and Patrick followed with run-producing doubles.

The Eagles scored five in the third, highlighted by Haynes' two-run homer and Patrick's two-run single. Emily Briggs and Patrick led UMW with three hits apiece, with Patrick driving in five and Briggs scoring three.

Otterman gained the win, allowing one hit while striking out eight batters.

In the second game, the Eagles scored seven runs in the third and nine in the fifth. In the third, Brittany Scites and Alex Tenney led off with singles, with Emily Briggs adding an RBI groundout before Hannah Hautz and Britnee Haynes plated runs with singles. Hannah Williams and Morgan Fries each added RBIs to push the lead to 7-0 through three innings.

In the fifth, Stefannie Asselanis singled and moved to third on an error before Caroline Callahan scored her on a fielder's choice. Fried plated Callahan with a single, and Katelyn Chisholm followed with a walk. Malia Rogers added an RBI single before Tenney scored a run with a groundout.

After a pair of errors, Asselanis doubled for her second hit of the frame, and Callahan capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Fries led the Eagles with three hits in three at bats, with four RBI and two runs scored. Asselanis singled and doubled, and Tenney singled twice. Courtney Merson gained the win for the Eagles, allowing three hits and one earned run in five innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts.
