UMW Softball Splits Wednesday Twinbill at Lynchburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Wednesday doubleheader at Lynchburg College, winning the opener, 4-3, in 10 innings, before falling in game two, 4-2. UMW moves to 12-8 on the season.

The Eagles scored first in the opener with a run in the second, as Hannah Hautz led off the frame with a home run. After Lynchburg scored once in the third, neither team would score until extra innings.

UMW did its work in the eight with two outs, as Brittany Scites singled to put runners on the corners, and Hautz walked. With the bases loaded, Olivia Tatara walked to score one run, and Hannah Otterman followed with an RBI single.

Lynchburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, and both teams were held in check in the ninth, before the Eagles scored in the 10th. A Scites single put runners on the corners, and Emily Briggs followed with an RBI groundout to plate the eventual winning run. Hannah Otterman forced a sacrifice, pop out, and grounder to end the game.

Otterman gained the win with 10 innings of work, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. Scites led the way with four hits, while Hautz added two, including the homer.

In the nightcap, the Eagles scored in the first, as a pair of Hornet errors led to a run. Lynchburg scored two in the second to take the lead, but the Eagles tied the score in the fifth. With runners on second and third, Briggs reached on a throwing error in scoring the tying run.

Lynchburg scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take the win. Zoie Patrick led UMW with two hits.

Ashton Ferneyhough took the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs in four innings, with six hits and a walk allowed.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they visit Southern Virginia in CAC play at 4 p.m.
