UMW Softball Sweeps Bridgewater in Thursday Twinbill

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept Bridgewater College at home in Thursday's doubleheader, 3-0 and 8-0. The Eagles improve to 10-4 on the season.

In the first game, the Eagles jumped out to a quick lead. Brittany Scites singled and Alex Tenney reached on a fielder's choice.  Hannah Hautz then drilled a two run homer to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. No runs were scored for the next three innings. In the fifth, Scites scored on a fielder's choice. Both teams would go scoreless the rest of the game.

Hannah Otterman completed the shutout and gave up only four hits in her impressive afternoon on the mound. Hautz drove in all three runs for the Eagles, while Scites led all players with two hits.

In the nightcap, the Eagles jumped to a quick 5-0 lead in the first thanks to hits from Scites, Hautz, Olivia Tatara, and Katelyn Chisholm. In the second inning, Hautz drove in Tenney to give the Eagles a comfortable 6-0 lead.

Both teams would go scoreless until the Eagles ended the game in the fifth on the mercy rule, with a final score of 8-0. Britnee Hays started off the inning with a single, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chisholm was hit by a pitch, which brought the winning run to the plate. Erin Stinson doubled to center, scoring Hays and Chisholm. Tenney drilled one to left field, scoring Stinson and clinching the game.

Tenney led the Eagles with three hits and one RBI and Hautz recorded two hits and two RBI. The Eagles did not miss a beat on the mound as Rachel Watts struck out three, giving up only one hit.

UMW is back in action on Saturday as they host a doubleheader against Salisbury at 12:00 PM.
