UMW Softball Sweeps Shenandoah in Sunday Doubleheader

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept  Sunday doubleheader from Shenandoah University, 4-3 and 10-5, on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-4 on the season.

In the first game, a Hannah Williams' double in the second inning scored teammate Olivia Tatara to take a 1-0 lead. Shenandoah struck back in the fourth by scoring two runs of their own, taking the lead at 2-1. The Eagles responded with a Brittney Scites three run homer to take control at 4-2. The Eagles wouldn't look back and go on to win 4-3. Williams led the Eagles with two hits.

Senior Hannah Otterman picked up the win for the Eagles, allowing five hits in seven innings, with three earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

In the second game the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first and never looked back. They added another run in the third to make it 6-0. The Eagles continued to pile on the runs and led by as many as seven runs in the contest. Shenandoah made its rally attempts in the fourth and seventh but came up short. The Eagles finished the day with a 10-5 victory.

Brittnee Haynes led the Eagles with two hits, a home run, and four RBIs. Brittany Scites, Hannah Hautz, Emily Briggs, and Olivia Tatara each had two hits.

Ahston Ferneyhough picked up the win in relief for the Eagles, pitching 3.2 innings of relief, allowing four hits and two earned runsno walks and a strikeout.

UMW will return to action on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Catholic at 3:00 PM.
