UMW Softball Drops Two on Day One of CAC Tournament

Newport News, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington dropped their opening games of the CAC Tournament on Thursday, 5-3 to York and 3-2 to Frostburg State. The Eagles close their season at 13-14 overall.

Game 1: York 5 - UMW 3

The Spartans got on the scoreboard first, scoring three runs in the top of the third. Kate Maloney smacked a two run homer, as part of the three run stanza. She followed that up with an RBI triple the next inning to give York an early 4-0 lead. The Spartans tacked on another in the fifth before the Eagles struck back.

A Brianna D'Agata single scored Zoie Patrick to cut into the deficit at 5-1. Brittany Scites followed that up with an RBI double to right center scoring D'Agata. Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, Olivia Tatara hit her first collegiate home run to left field to make the Spartan lead 5-3. UMW would be stymied in the last inning, as York took the opener putting the Eagles in a win or go home matchup with the Bobcats.

Game 2: Frostburg State 3 - UMW 2

The Eagles struck first, scoring their two runs in the top half of the third. With Tatara and D'Agata on base, Erica Falvey hit a double down the left field line, scoring D'Agata. Alex Tenney followed up with a single that plated Tatara.

Trailing 2-0, the Bobcats got all three of their runs off a three run homer from Renay Aubel. That would be all they needed, as Hannah Tavik came in for three innings to earn the win.

Rachel Watts pitched 4.2, giving up seven hits and three runs. Ashton Ferneyhough came in for 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.
