Eagles Fall in Twinbill to Christopher Newport on Wednesday

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington softball team fell to Christopher Newport in a doubleheader at the Battleground. UMW fell in game one, 7-2 and fell 7-0 in the nightcap. The Eagles fall to 11-10, 4-4 CAC on the year.

The Captains got on the scoreboard first, with a run to open the contest. Candice Zollars scored on a sac fly by Kristina McLaughlin to take a 1-0 lead. UMW aswered right back, scoring in their half of the first. Bireet Chitty scored on a wild pitch, after she got on with a walk. CNU took the lead back in the fifth, after McLaughlin got the Eagles again. Kristina singled in Meagan Jones to take a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles fought back, tying the game in the bottom of the sixth with an Emily Briggs singles to center. Briggs found her way to third after the throw home got past the CNU catcher. Brittany Scites scored on the play. The Eagles would strand Briggs and the game would be tied going into the seventh.

In the final inning, CNU put up a five spot to take a 7-2 lead and shut the door on the Eagles in the bottom half to hold on for the win. UMW got seven innings from Hannah Otterman, as Briggs lead the Eagles going 2-3 with a pair of singles.

The second game started the way the first did, with CNU jumping ahead early. A McLaughlin triple plated Jones, as part of a three run first inning. McLaughlin hit a single in the second to score Zollars, and the Captains led 4-0 after two. Thats all they would need as Krista Lewis was lights out in the circle.

UMW was held without a hit in the game, as they fell 7-0 in game two. The Eagles did not have a baserunner all game.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, April 10th, when they travel to Penn State-Harrisburg for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
