Otterman and Watts Dominate in the Circle; UMW Sweeps Southern Virginia

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington softball team contiuned their winning ways, sweeping past Southern Virginia on Friday, 6-0 and 8-0. The Eagles allowed just five hits in two games. The pair of wins moves the Eagles to 11-6 on the year.

Game one saw UMW dominate from start to finish. UMW got the scoring started in the first, after an RBI by Brittany Scites scored Bireet Chitty. The Eagles struck again in the second with two runs. After a walk to load the bases, Brittnee Haynes took a pitch off the knee to score Scites from third. Emily Briggs followed suit with a RBI after an error.

Hannah Otterman helped her own cause, scoring two in the bottom half of the fourth. The Eagles would score one more run in the fifth to take game one, 6-0. Otterman threw a complete game, three hit shutout, striking out five Knights.

In the nightcap, UMW led off the game with a run in the first. Stefannie Assalanis knocked in Scites off an RBI single. The Eagles got a trio of runs in both the third and fourth innings. Kate Chisholm crossed the plate on a passed ball, and was followed up by an RBI single from Scites, scoring Chitty. Scites then crossed home after an Olivia Tatara groundout.

In the fourth, Chisholm singled in both Hannah Williams and Brianna D'Agata. Chitty followed suit with an RBI single of her own, scoring Alex Tenney. The Eagles would close the game with Zoie Patrick scoring from second, on the Chisholm single.

Rachel Watts went six scoreless innings for the Eagles, striking out eight batters and only allowing two hits.

UMW returns to the field tomorrow, Saturday April 5th. The Eagles host Frostburg State in a CAC showdown on Senior Day at 12:00 p.m.
